I am Dr. Cinda Scott: Marine biologist, educator, public speaker, ocean equity advocate and fabunerd.

By sharing my perspective as a black woman in ocean science I’m using my unique voice to support global marine conservation efforts and to build equity in the field.

I have always been fascinated by the ocean. Its power, its smell, its magnificent creatures, and the way in which it connects us all. In 1999, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Environmental Studies from Middlebury College. In 2009, I completed my Ph.D. in Marine Biology and Fisheries from the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

My early career was devoted to understanding the complexities of life at the molecular level. My expansion to comprehending these complexities at the macro level fuels my curiosity of the natural world, leading me on journeys around the globe in an insatiable quest to learn as much as possible. Come along with me as I explore my love of learning, travel, and my hopeless attraction to all things fabulous.

Throughout my studies, I witnessed great inequity in ocean science. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and helping BIPOC students gain access to and grow in these fields through science communication and personal experience. Let’s work together to diversify who represents ocean science.

Sea. Learn. Inspire.

Since 2003, I have been mentoring students of all ages (11 to 75) about the wonders of the ocean. Your unique voice matters and is critical in our global effort to curb the impacts of climate change. Currently, I am Center Director at The School for Field Studies (SFS) in Bocas del Toro, Panamá. SFS provides international educational experiences for students seeking careers in marine biology, environmental studies and conservation.

As Center Director, I manage all aspects of the school’s Tropical Island Biodiversity Studies program. I oversee operations, student health and safety, and the development of curriculum and research projects. I get such joy watching students succeed both personally and academically and love supporting the next generation of fabunerds!

I am passionate about the conservation of the ocean and its marine life. I’ve been honored to share my knowledge and experiences with a wide range of audiences, speaking both in person and at virtual events at renowned educational and non-profit institutions.
